Spy vs Spy - Washington style March 6, 2007

Looks like the Washington trip went off without a hitch - even though one of the vehicles planned to make the trip decided to back out at the last minute. The boys visited many local attractions - including the space & flight museum, the scouting memorial, and the spy museum. Thankfully, the spy museum was visited after the scheduled trip to the white house - I’m not so certain these mustachio’ed villians would have been granted entry.
Thanks to all adults for taking the time to make this event a memorable one. Pictures can be seen here.
‘07 Winter (?) Camporee January 18, 2007

2007 has arrived - but Winter still seemed to be on vacation during this years Winter Camporee. Held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, our scouts participated in several competitions, won the sled race, and brought enough food to keep each patrol stuffed for the weekend. Our station - water from snow - was a little difficult to perform when the temperature hovered around 45 degrees. Ah, but the rain was there - our constant companion on troop 565 outings. We’ve got some pictures to view here.

This campout marks the arrival of a new assistant scoutmaster - Charlie Tiranno. Welcome, Charlie. With a full complement of Assistant Scoutmasters available, Scoutmaster Bill was free to watch the Jets play the Bills. The weather took the weekend off as well - while cold, the temperature was 23 degrees upon arrival, reaching a balmy 42 when we left. Perfect winter camping weather! Pictures can be found here.
Harriman Campout: Plans - what plans? November 19, 2006

"Plans are worthless, but planning is everything"
In 1957, Dwight D. Eisenhower made a speech in Washington, DC. to underscore the importance of adjusting plans to suit the situation at hand - and to be prepared to do so. Troop 565 faced many mid course corrections during this annual trip to Harriman - and came up with a workable solution each time. The troop started out the trip following the wrong trail, but since everyone had maps, was able to come up with an alternative route to get everyone safely to our destination. Some scouts overpacked, but others stepped in and distributed the load amongst the patrol. When the troop arrived at the planned campsite, another troop had claimed it, so the scouts switched to plan B and hiked to another site. And finally, when some scouts (and scoutmasters) needed some extra time to navigate the steep inclines and rock faces on the ridge while other scouts needed to get home early, the scouts made a wise decision to split the troop (scoutmasters included) into two groups so everyone could have a good time and still meet prior obligations. All in all, an impressive show of decision making.
Pictures can be found here. Next up, Alpine.
