About
So - you wanna know about Boy Scout Troop 565?
As of 2006, Troop 565 has been in Smithtown, NY for 30 years and is part of the Benjamin Tallmadge District in the Suffolk County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. We are charted by the Smithtown United Methodist Church at 230 Middle County Rd, Smithtown, NY. We meet there Monday evenings, from 7:30-9:00, from September to June. In August, scouts typically attend summer camp at the Yawgoog Scout Reservation in Rockville, Rhode Island.
We are a camping troop, and we like to go camping on average once a month. Take a look at the photos page to get a feel of the type of camping we do.
What is Boy Scouting? Here is a quick link to review from BSA. BSA also has an informative site (http://thescoutzone.com) for those considering joining scouting.
How does the troop operate? Each scout belongs to a patrol, and is responsible for working together as a unit to be a boy led troop. from the BSA site:
The patrol method gives Boy Scouts an experience in group living and participating citizenship. It places responsibility on young shoulders and teaches boys how to accept it. The patrol method allows Scouts to interact in small groups where members can easily relate to each other. These small groups determine troop activities through elected representatives.
Each patrol has a Patrol Leader (some have assistant Patrol Leaders), and work together with Troop Leaders (Senior Patrol Leader, Ass’t Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide & Quartermaster) to set the direction & activities of the troop. Scoutmasters are there to assist the boys, but ultimately the boys must make the decisions and perform the tasks to move the troop forward. That is the scout way.
Currently, we have five patrols - the alligators, the pirates, the leprechauns and the squeavers. The old goat patrol is made up of Adult leaders who attend each outing. Each patrol has their own page and the patrol leader can access and post relevant information to their patrol on it.
