Fall Camporee ’06

When: October 13-15
Where: Longwood Estates

Update: To accommodate everyones schedule, the troop will be traveling to Longwood in two groups – one leaving on Friday @ 5pm sharp from the Senior Patrol Leaders house, the other leaving on Saturday @ 7:30 sharp from the church parking lot. For those who would like to make the drive out to see the festivities, Longwood Estates is located in Ridge, NY on the corner of Smith Road and Longwood Road. It is somewhat difficult to find the exact address, so here is a link to the location.

Events start on Saturday at 8:30 am, and last year the pumpkin chucking event started around 1 pm (this years time isn’t listed).  If you have any questions, the patrol leader is your point of contact – either he will know or will find out for you.

The theme this year is "Early America". In keeping with this theme, each patrol must bring the following items:

  • Compass
  • Travois material
  • Bundle of fire wood
  • 6" diameter pine log or any other wood
  • Ax (and associated safety items)
  • Lacrosse stick – extra points if homemade
  • Totin’ chip card
  • Firem’n chit card
  • Marshmallows
  • Corn meal ingredients – enough for 2 patties per scout
  • Cooking stuff: pot, spoon, oil, spatula, salt, water/milk

Competition includes a lacrosse game, a campsite / gateway competition (Indian Theme), and station events.  Oh, and a pumpkin chuck (more on that later).

The stations for this event are going to have one first place winner each, not an overall first, second, or third place.

  • Roast corn meal over wood fire (or some type of authentic Indian cooking)
  • Pioneer fire building – string burning
  • Pioneering log chopping
  • Orienteering course
  • Indian tomahawk throw
  • Smallest Indian fire (for younger scouts) and "roast a marshmallow"
  • Indian medicine
  • Travois race – patrols will bring their own wood
  • Bow and Arrows – info to come

The Pumpkin chuck (or punkin chunk, who knows why people spell it that way!) is different this year.  All catapults must be "au-naturale" – that is, constructed from trees, logs, sand, stones & ropes.  No metal of any kind.  We are allowed to bring our "non basic wood" (i.e. last years winner!) to show, but only for demonstration purposes.  Even so, I bet our scouts will come up with another winning design!
